Thank you for this one – I love it. I’m living in the Charente region now, surrounded by vineyards, and I like how I can still tell it’s a sunday just by hearing the silence!
This post’s timing is interesting. I was just remembering the other day a trip years ago to the Erie Canal Village in Rome, NY. We got to ride on a canal boat and the think that surprised us the most was how quiet it was. Yes, we are invaded by the background noise of cars, jets, radios, and electronics. No quietness for serious contemplation.
It’s said that true silence would drive you mad and, I believe, the record time a human has endured it is 45 minutes. http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/06/02/true-silence-will-drive-you-mad/
Today, even when miles from any other source of noise, you will often hear an airliner flying overhead.
Such a pity!
It is also believed that with intense training like Zen monks practice in Zen monasteries that time can be prolonged. It is hard to simulate in any modern environment an absolute silence, yet the message of the Arp’s quote I understood is that we should try to withdrawn ourselves from technological noise from time to time – no matter how it might be hard.
Excellent thought. Many of us can vouch for the value of ‘Silence’ and ‘Meditation’. 🙂

We all need from time to time to be reminded of the value of silence, since it’s becoming a rarity. Thanks for stopping by and reading my blog 🙂

Yes, I totally agree – we need to be reminded from time to time the value of silence and reconnecting with ourselves on deeper level.

Sigh. I meant “thing,” not “think.”
