31 day poem challenge and a gift of writing

31

Many of you who have been following my blog for some time know that I participated in the NaPoWriMo 2016 and it was a great experience. Some of the benefits I have described here.

At this moment, particularly in the last couple of weeks I haven’t been satisfied with my writing practice and I think it’s time to stir up things: in the next 31 days, in the coming December I intent to write 31 day long poem. Sounds strange? 🙂 Well, what I actually want to do is to write ONE poem for 31 days. The goal is to add at least three stanzas each day. And why not 30 poems for 30 days as usually challenges go? In this way, I think I will practice more my focus and attention, because as the time progresses I will have to each time read my poem from the beginning in order to continue it. So after couple of days, it will really require to keep up my concentration and follow the thinking pattern.

The second thing is, I want to use this writing experiment as a sort of an emotional tracker, to see how that reflects on my writing every day and are there any fluctuations, especially during holidays.

And the third things is, that this is a kind of ‘gift of writing’ (my birthday falls on 31st December 😉 ) – and use it as an opportunity to challenge myself to improve and observe my writing habits.

Poem post will be updated regularly every day and I will also use #31daypoem hashtag, so it’s easier to follow. If you also want to improve your writing and form a better writing habit, please join me in this fun experiment, share this information and invite friends who you think could really benefit from this exercise. Use the same hashtag so it can be easy to track down.

Once the experiment ends, beside the ’31 day long’ poem as a result, I will share my impressions and how that have impacted my writing in general.

Publishing other regular posts will go as scheduled.

So, how about you, have you participated in any similar writing experiment? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

  2. Good luck with this Maja … sounds challenging! I just today started a ‘Six Word’ thing aiming to post once or twice a day until ‘Their story’ comes to a natural end. I like the challenge of ‘Six Words’ and linking them to flow.

  3. Too much other writing going on (and despite wanting to do Nanowrimo, my word count is nada because other projects reared their heads–and work–grr…). But this looks interesting, and I hope it works out great. I don’t have a knack for poetry, so I’ll just root for ya. Hugs, and enjoy the ride.

  4. This sounds really, really interesting and challenging in a fun way!!! I’m really thinking about doing it… In fact, if I am going to do it, part of me wants to start now! LOL My problem would/will be having to wait until the next day to add to the poem! So it would be a real exercise in restraint for me … but I might very well jump in and do it! You have whet my appetite, that’s for sure! All the best to you in this (and all of your other) venture. Blessings to you!

    1. Hi Jonathan,
thanks for your kind support. With this challenge I think you can go anyway you like – you can add your own rules. The goal is to form a better writing habit and be mindful about it.
However you decide to go about this challenge and writing, I’m looking forward to reading your work 🙂

  5. I’ll give this a shot, if only to see how long I can keep up with it.

So it’s three stanzas per day? How many lines per stanza, the usual four?

Also, and you’re probs gonna call me a total rookie here, but how do I use the hashtag? Does that go into the Tags section?

Anyway, good luck to you, and I look forward to reading your 31-day poem. 🙂

    1. Hi Gabriel,
thanks for joining in. I personally usually write in free verse style, so you can organize your stanzas as you like. No strict rules.
You can put 31daypoem in the tags section so people can easily follow your progress, but also as a hashtag on other social media, like twitter – depending where you are active.
I wish you all the best in this exercise and looking forward to reading your work 🙂

  6. Good luck with it Maja.

I’m just finishing 3 months (September – November) of Poems per day and it gets to be hard work.

I had hopes of doing a year of quality work that way, but have been diverted into other projects and am running out of puff a little.

I can still produce a poem per day, but want it to be acceptable, in my own eyes, as a certain quality of output, not just something for the sake of the exercise.

    It’s difficult – but fun.

    Cheers,

    Frank

    1. Thanks Frank for sharing your experience. My focus here is to form a better writing habit and work on my mindfulness practice. In such challenges I do agree that everything we produce won’t be of the highest quality, but as Maya Angelou said ‘the more you use creativity, to more creative you are’. 🙂

      1. Yes, I understand and agree Maja.

Plus there’s nothing like engaging with the task to get at the potential revelations inherent.

VI wish you the very best of luck and writing in the endeavor.

  7. Best of luck Maja. I would love to get involved but unfortunately I have just completed a challenge, writing a poem a day in November, and need to focus on other writing in December. I will of course visit your blog each day and offer my support throughout the challenge.

  9. Well, Maya, it took me a bit to make up my mind and commit as I have a million reasons why I can’t, shouldn’t, or wouldn’t do this right now, but I’m in. They will be continuous, but stand-alone posts with the same title but numbered (Confused? No problem. It will be clear when you see it. I will tag them as you asked.) My first one is ready to post (almost) shortly.

      1. My apologies dear Maja… for writing your name MaYa instead of MaJa yesterday. I live on Maya Drive, hence the typo. Or may be due to not enough coffee or my constant state of sleep deprivation. In any case, Maja, enjoying your challenge; have another great writing day.
